  Scotland's Longest-Running archaeological excavation
Estate: Fetternear Estate, Kemnay, Aberdeenshire
Come and visit Aberdeenshire’s and Scotland’s longest-running archaeological excavation – the 16th year without a break. The Fetternear “Bishop’s Palace” and the Leslies of Balquhain – featured on the hugely popular BBC Scotland Clan History series in 2009. From 29th July – 4th August 2010 the Scottish Episcopal Palaces Project , run by its Director, Dr Penny Dransart (Head of Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of Wales, Lampeter) will continue their fieldwork to piece together further information about the medieval Bishop’s Palace and the post-medieval mansion, located on Fetternear Estate, near Kemnay, Aberdeenshire, AB51 5LX. Originally built by the Catholic Bishops of Aberdeen, as their summer residence, the area surrounding this iconic, ruined mansion has been the subject of years of painstaking excavation and research. Many significant finds have been made over the years with traces of Mesolithic man in the form of worked flints, fragmentary pottery sherds dating from the Bronze Age and the 12th century, and numerous other finds dating from the 13th century onwards. The regular army of local volunteers who come to work each year on the excavation throughout the month of July will be backed up, once again in 2010 it is expected, by a number of international archaeology enthusiasts from the USA and Europe. Visitors are most welcome to view the dig, find out about our latest discoveries and enjoy the estate’s walks again this summer.
